The song one has listened to since childhood sticks in the mind forever. Songs introduced and educated a person to the world are influential towards our life. Abdullah Totong Mahmud was a teacher of kindergarten teachers, composing songs for children who yearn for that happiness in learning and growing. He has inspired the two of the most influential people in the society, not only the children or the future leaders, but also educators. Through his own education, A. T. Mahmud was able to help his fellow teachers discover a new teaching method, improve the education of children and entertain children as well as help them develop a positive personality as Indonesian citizens.
Education have always been important to people the education A. T. Mahmud provided to the society was different. He taught the kindergarten teachers a different method ("Abdullah Totong Mahmud") to teach their students. He was very passionate towards education and he was the person that influenced most of the kindergarten teachers up to today. The songs A. T. Mahmud composed was very meaningful for children’s education and teachers find out using A. T Mahmud songs are very useful in educating kindergarten children. The influence A. T. Mahmud gave to all the teachers around Indonesia are from the songs he composed, without him what the teacher can do to entertain and give education at the same time to their students. Up to today the songs composed by A. T. Mahmud are still used by teachers, such as ‘Gecko on the Wall’ and ‘Rainbow’ which are very common to Indonesian people where students can learn from the lyrics of the songs (“Children’s Songs Composer A. T. Mahmud Dies, but His Music Lives On”). A. T. Mahmud noticed that children usually bored by the teachers explaining in classes. So, he created this method involving activities for children to really absorb what the teachers are trying to say. Remembering how much he loved to learn music when he was young, he came up with solution of composing educational songs. “Many of the students looked restless when being taught. Pak Mahmud’s teaching method made the students more eager to learn because it is entertaining at the same time. They would even sing it after school and students from other schools heard them. Other teachers from other schools start to notice how happy the students were to learn and to sing at the same time so they started applying the method” ("Abdullah Totong Mahmud").This teaching method was not available in Indonesia since there weren’t many children songs. Many of the teachers around the kindergarten school who applied the teaching method were grateful for his songs because it made teaching easy. A. T. Mahmud was able to change the ways of teaching into the usage of songs to spread education in more fun way.
As much as Mahmud influenced his fellow teachers, helping the young generation’s growing minds was a crucial part of developing Indonesia’s society ("Abdullah Totong Mahmud"). At that time, the students who were still young needed a proper song for them to sing. “Children their age still haven’t thought about problems like that. The lyrics of the songs to which they were singing are what adults want and what they think of. Making our children sing those types of songs are forcing them to think of things they shouldn’t really think and understand yet.” (“Marzuki”). Children singing songs that they couldn’t relate to or even understand wouldn’t benefit or giving them impact. From his own musical education, he started to compose songs about simple everyday things that children see or tend to observe (“Children’s Songs Composer A. T. Mahmud Dies, but His Music Lives On”). These songs were short and easy to memorize, making it very easy for the children to sing and enjoy. More importantly, the children also get the education they needed without even realizing it. One of the songs he composed called ‘Gecko on the Wall’ for example, let children know about the little reptile that crawls on the walls of their homes (“Marzuki”).Through his songs, not only did children have appropriate songs to sing, they could also receive the proper education that they needed for the present and future. “Without Pak Mahmud’s songs, we cannot truly educate our children to the fullest (Rahman, A.T. Mahmud MenitiPelangi). From his teaching talent, musical skill, and his feelings toward education and children, A. T. Mahmud has succesfully improved the education of the young generation, providing a better future for the Indonesian society.
Mahmud’s songs not only helped improve children’s education but also helped them develop positive personality. A. T. Mahmud composed songs that successfully have a good impact on children. For example, one of the famous songs composed by A. T. Mahmud called ‘Pelangi’ taught children what a rainbow is and also how mighty God is since He created the world, including rainbows. From the song ‘Pelangi’ it can relate to the culture for Indonesian people to have religion. This song also helped children preserve that cultureby developing their faith in God. Many of his songs also teach children to respect their elders, be polite, etc. After he passed away, the National Commission for Child Protection and education expert Arief Rahman said, “Indonesia had lost an icon and a true champion of children’s education.” A. T. Mahmud influenced the children of Indonesia through songs, shaping their personality based on the Indonesian culture (Rahman, Arief. A.T. Mahmud MenitiPelangi).
Abdullah Totong Mahmud was one of the people that developed Indonesia, not only providing good education, but creating a better future. He created a new and creative teaching method that helped teachers educate their students properly. Proper education leads to successful students with bright futures. His songs not only created leaders, but leaders with the personality traits of some of the valued Indonesian culture. Mahmud and his passion for children, education and music have helped improve Indonesian society in many ways.

Reflection
The marks I got for this assignment is 6+ for criteria A and 6 for criteria B (all out of 8). I'm satisfied with my grades because I did my best to have all the requirements needed to get maximum mark. Though this assignment is quire challenging because the information its so limited, so I should expand my research to use another type of source other than web (book). But in the end I got a lot of information from both book and couple of websites. I think I should improve on my grammars, as Ms Peggy said that the words or sentence underlined with red and green should be fix, but instead I didn't pay a lot of attention on it and end up having some grammar errors. Another I should be more pay attention is at the format. Such as the MLA format, citation, fonts, and heading, these are just technical problems that I should have no problem next time
Intercultural Awareness
How this subject related to intercultural awareness is from the wide range and/or variations of artists my friends share. Some of my friends that are not originally from Indonesia they have the option to choose artist either from their own country or others. In the end they present their artist, this helps me to develop my attitude and knowledge from other country. For example, one of my friend choose to use influential Indian artist, this makes me realize that our world have variations of artist that had influence their own country in different ways. So basically this assignment gave me more attitude to change perspective of other countries and more understanding in other country's influential artist.
