Music Theory, Basic elements of music
In Music theory I learn about the basic elements of music. I must to make a poster with the information of the basic elements of music. At least I must to got 8 elements information, but the more the elements the better score it is. Later we will presentate the poster to music theory teacher, Pak Agus. He will ask question to us to make we understand our own poster. I also made DW for this project. DW is a reflection. I must to write DW every time I have music theory.
Basic Elements of Music
So this is my information of the basic elements of music. I got 13 information of elements. This is the information of the 13 elements:
Rhythm
Rhythm is the time element in music. Divisions of the beat (sounds and silences) create rhythm. Think of rhythm as the pulse of a song. In a rock band, the drummer creates the rhythm for the guitarist and bassist by keeping time on the drums.
Tempo
Tempo is the pace of the music, measured in beats per minute. While rhythm is the pulse of a song, tempo describes the speed at which the pulse repeats.
Meter
Meter organizes rhythm into groups of strong and weak beats. When a drummer counts 1-and-2-and-3-and-4, the numbers are the strong beats because they are played with more emphasis. The "ands" are the weak beats because they are played with less emphasis. Meter is what compels you to clap, snap or tap along to a song.
Dynamics
Dynamics describes the loudness or softness of music. We commonly relate dynamics to mood. When you hear loud music, you might think of it as "angry." Dynamics can change throughout a song. A quiet cello might begin a piece, then gradually, more instruments join in until all of the orchestra plays at once for the finale.
Dynamics marks are based on Italian words. There 2 kinds of mark, quiet or loud. “Forte” means loud and “Piano” or “Pianoforte” means quiet.
Melody:
Melody is the combination of pitch and rhythm. Tones are played in succession, one after the other. When you hum the tune of a song, you are humming the melody. Melody moves a piece along from one note to the next. Melody have different pitches (high or low) that are played at different times
Harmony
Harmony is created by simultaneous use of pitch and chords. When three or more tones are played together, a chord is produced. Picture a guitar. You may hold down four strings, but you strike all four strings together as one chord.
Think of harmony as more than one pitch played at the same time. In a violin duet, one violin plays the melody and another plays harmony, an often different set of notes to complement the melody. Harmony is not as basic as melody, however. You can sing a line of melody alone, but harmony does not always sound pleasing without the melody. In fact, even notes played together in harmony can be designed to sound dissonant, or not pleasing to the ear.
Texture
Texture indicates the number of independent parts of a song. Textures can be monophonic (melody alone), homophonic (less intricate harmony with melody) or polyphonic (several different melodies playing at once).
Timbre/Tone Color
Timbre refers to the quality of the sound. Two instruments, such as the flute and the clarinet, can play notes at the same time, but you can tell the instruments apart by their different sounds, or timbre. When you describe the buzzing sound of a guitar or the shrill sound of a violin, you are discussing the timbre.
Form
The form is the architectural structure of the song. In building, architectural elements indicate whether it is a Cape Cod or a gymnasium. Similarly, the structure of patterns, tempo, rhythm and melody determine the type of song.
Text
PS: text and texture are different. not all musical pieces incorporate text, this element is optional. However, lyrical content is often vital.
Pitch
Timbre, melody and harmony are elements of a musical pitch. Highness or lowness in a note---the frequency of sound also can describe pitch. Pitch is an important part of music. When you play a series of pitches on an instrument you are making music. Understanding the elements of pitch can help you learn about music and become a better musician or singer.
Lowness & Highness
How low or high a pitch sounds is determined by its frequency. Low frequency notes sound lower in tone and high frequency sounds sound higher. Larger instruments tend to have a low pitch, such as the bass, while smaller instruments including the violin tend to have a higher pitch.
A melodic line of music can contain both high and low notes to keep it interesting. This series of high and low notes creates a musical phrase or sentence. On a musical staff, lower-pitched notes are in the lower portion and higher pitched notes build progressively in the upper part of the staff.
Instruments
Instruments are most basically broken down into four categories: string, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. String instruments produce sound when the strings are bowed like a violin or plucked like a guitar. Most woodwind instruments produce sound by the vibration of reeds in the mouthpiece, as with the clarinet or saxophone. A flute is a woodwind that produces sound when air is passed across the mouthpiece. Brass instruments are usually made from brass or another metal and produce sound when air is blown into their cup-shaped mouthpieces. Brass instruments usually have valves like on the trumpet or slides like on the trombone.

DW
My DW:
8 October 2010
In this day I learn about the basic elements of music. Pak Agus gave us project about basic elements of music. The project is we must to make a poster with the basic elements of music. There should be many kinds of elements. Pak Agus told us that we must to do 8 or more elements. Well, in this day we only talk about the objective, some info, and a little time of research but I didn’t did the research yet in this day. I also haven’t decided what elements of music it will be. He explains the objectives of our work. This is the objective that Pak Agus wanted to do.
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, the students are able to:
- Do research in the internet and in other resources the information about
the basic element of music
(in deep & critical thinking)
- Compile it into poster
- Present the work in front of class.
- Must use at least 1 book and 2 website for resources
15 October 2010
In this day, for the whole period I was doing research for my poster. I had decided the elements that I will do. So I decide to have 9 basic elements. Those are; rhythm, meter, dynamics, harmony, instruments, melody, pitch, tempo, and timbre. Then I keep finding all this information. It was hard finding the excellent information. So my friend told me a good website, which is http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/arts/music/elements/elemofmusic/main.htm . In this website there are a good information that I understand some of it. I successfully get a good in information about dynamics. I didn’t really understand the others information. I only understand dynamics. That’s all I got in this day.
29 October 2010
This day I’ve been researching, and I got another basic elements. I just figure out if I do more basic elements of music I got a better score for Music Theory from Pak Agus. So I decided to make thirteen basic elements of music. From nine I add four additional basic elements. I add texture, form, Lowness and Highness, and text (it’s different texture). I got that choice from, http://www.ehow.com/ . So I just search “Basic elements of music” in the search bar of ehow.com, then I got this four additional basic elements. But I didn’t got an information at all, and thanks to Aditya, my friend, that have gave me the website
5 November 2010
Pak Agus let us work on our poster in his room. But there is a one thing that is hard. We may not do our poster in our house, so we may not bring it to our home. Because Pak Agus wanted to see us working and score how we work. But I didn’t do my poster today. Because I haven’t done with my research. So I kept researching for my poster. I also do some of it in study hall in Pak Agus’s class and for my research I spent it in my home. In the end of the period, I still haven’t done with my research. I need eleven more information of basic elements of music. I only done researching about dynamics, harmony, and pitch. That is the easiest information. For the pitch I got it from my friend which play piano and he was talented. The book title was “Piano Signs”. I got a lot information about pitch and a little about meter.
12 November 2010
This was the last day of making poster. I’ve done with my information. I’ve done it at my home, I;ve printed it already. Then the next step was easy. I f I have print my information along with the pictures, I only must to stick my information to the poster with a glue as creative as I can. So, the end of the period I had done sticking all my information to the poster and making the title. That is what I do today. I spend the whole to stick all my information and the title. The next step was only decorating it. I decided to do it at Tuesday when it’s Study Hall.
26 November 2010
I’ve perfectly my poster. I have done sticking my information to the poster, Making the title as creative as I can, and I have done making the decoration as creative as I can. So, this period it’s the presentation time. I will be the last who will present my poster. There will be no possible that I will do the presentation today. So I watch three or four of my friend presenting their poster.
3 December 2010
This day I thought I will present my poster. But I don’t. Actually I wasn’t really ready yet. So that’s was a luck that I didn’t present the poster today. I didn’t present my poster because Pak Agus didn’t come to school today. So there will be a sub. The sub is Ibu Ernie. We can’t present our poster without Pak Agus who will score it. So we given time to do this DW. Minimum 500 words.
10 December 2010
This day, we came to class and Pak Agus was there. Means I will present my poster today. I was perfectly ready. My turn has come. I didn’t really present my poster. Pak Agus only see and read my information in my poster. After he read, he gave me some question according to my information and some of the question was about the basic elements of music. He ask question to make sure that I understand basic elements of music and my own information. Some of the question I can’t answer. Because I forgot the answer. So that’s all my dw for quarter 2 in this project.

Reflection
My result wasn't that good, but it wasn't that bad, so it's a normal score. I got a normal score because when Pak Agus ask me some question from my poster, some of the question I can't answer it. I must to start to learn my own information. I must to improve to know my own information. I must to memorize the information to improve my score. Or by
