So this is the result of my project:
Part A
Vandals
Who were they?
The Vandals were from East of Europe, exactly, Eastern Germany, now it is Denmark. They are a tribe who crossed Europe and Africa. They started having conquests to Rome when the tribe settled near a river called the Danube. The Vandals had a religion called Arianism. It is actually similar to Christianity, but they believed that Jesus was not the Savior or God but came to help humanity. The Vandals were divided into 2 main parts. We can call them either the Hasdingii or the Asding and Siling or the Silingii. The Vandals were controlled and the name of the tribe ‘Vandals’ was gone by that time. The Vandals are Scandinavia.
What areas did they control and when?
The Vandals controlled the area Gaul and Spain. They invaded that land when between, AD 406 until 409. There were not many necessities so the Vandals asked help from the Romans. The Romans and the Vandals were not friends for a long time. The Vandals got control over several parts of North Africa and they conquered every part of Southern Spain when the King Gaiseric was king. They got all that land from AD 429. In 435 the Romans gave the Vandals land which was a part of North Africa. They captured Rome and Italy was also a place that the Vandals invaded in June 455.
How did they affect the Roman Empire?
The Vandals, like the other barbarian groups was one of the reasons that the Roman Empire failed. They did give good and bad affect on the Roman Empire. Because of the Vandals and the other tribes, called by the name ‘barbarians’, the Roman Empire lost Spain, had almost and about half of the Western territory was either lost or was ruined by them. There was a trade with the German tribes and the Roman Empire. One of the affect was the doubled-edged sword. Because of that the wars were better, and also it helped the military. The German tribes used the Roman coins from the 1st century BC at the Germanic areas.
What was their culture and society like?
The Vandals used Latin for their society. The Germanic tribes such as the Vandals, Goths most of the Germanic tribes did not know how to read. But the Germanic tribes farmed and had a goal different from the Huns. The tribes, most of them from believing beliefs they changed themselves into Christian people. The Vandals built Arian churches and also they minted coins in Africa. But the Romans that were near the Arian churches did not like the church. Because Christianity was one of the religions that the Vandals had and also because some people still believed in it, the Vandals had to lose the fight of Arian Christianity and Christianity. There is also a word called vandalism, the word is from the Roman because the vandals destroyed and ruined anything pretty.
How do you think they thought about the Romans?
I think they thought two perspectives of the Romans. First if I were the Vandals I would think that they were a treasure box. Well, I think of a treasure box because treasure boxes have goodies, money and jewelry right? By trading with them they can earn money and objects that they don’t have in Germany. Also if I were the Vandals I would try to trade as many objects as possible for my tribe’s needs. I would also think that the Romans were a pain. Like in Africa, the Vandals had a belief called Arian Christianity but the Romans who were Christians did not want it and they argued. It is not their business, right?
Huns
Who were they?
The Huns were from Asia, near Mongolia and China. They were called the Xiong-nu before they were called the Huns. In history it says that the Xiong-nu went out of China to find a better place to live, and they divided themselves into two groups. The bigger and main group went to Siberia because they went north-west. The Chinese people guarded themselves from the Huns by building the Great Wall of China which will protect them. The Huns had a great, powerful, knowledgeable leader that was called Attila. Attila was powerful, he received a gift from the Romans to stay as friends but he still fought them. When Attila died, their tribe was hopeless. The sons of Attila fought to be the leader and because of that there was chaos. Other tribes attacked the Huns and then the tribe disappeared. The Huns now live in Hungary.
What areas did they control and when?
The Huns first defeated the Alans in the year, 370 at the Volga River. Then the Alans become a team with the Huns. Then when the Alans became a team with the Huns, they defeated the Visigoths on the year 376. The Huns, they got control of Gaul in 451.
How did they affect the Roman Empire?
The Huns affected the Roman Empire but there was the good affect and the bad affect. The good affect was that the Huns for about 50 years served them and chased out other tribes who wanted to attack the Roman Empire. But the bad affect was that the Huns also fought with the Roman Empire during those years too. I think that they fighting with the Huns was a good affect too because the empire’s military can be better and can find a good plan to defeat them. Some of the Roman men lived with the Huns so they can learn more about them. I think that, that will be a good affect to the country because for example, they can learn more about their military, and they could find their weakness.
What was their culture and society like?
The Huns cut their babies chin because they didn’t want them to grow a beard. Also they flattened the nose of the babies because they wanted their enemies to be scared of their big face. There were no kings in the Hun tribe; instead the nobles leaded the tribe. The Huns had a lot of animals such as sheep, horses, goats, and cows. They also ate roots of plants and also hunted. They wore linen/rodent skin tunics and caps and leggings/trousers were made out of goat skin to wear. They wore their clothes until they fell to pieces. Attila wore clothes differently from them because his clothes were clean. They used double-edged, long, and straight swords. These swords were the examples of early Sassanian style.
How do you think they thought about the Romans?
The Hun tribe was the biggest and strongest tribe that the Roman Empire ever saw. They asked the Huns to fight for other tribes. I guess they wanted to be friends with the Huns because they were powerful, perhaps the Huns were feeling the Romans were small and tiny to defeat. The Roman Empire was afraid of the Huns. The other barbarians such as the Vandals, Franks and Goths also attacked the Roman Empire; the Roman Empire then was struggling. The Eastern part of Europe, the Emperor gave the Huns gold, but they wanted more gold and they threatened them; the Emperor would be really surprised and be scared. I think the Huns were very brave and, kind of like a child. Well, I want to say like a child because they weren’t scared of the Romans. I think they knew that the Romans were scared so they get the courage to demand for more gold.
The Franks
Franks:
1. (Date: September 10 2010) http://www.hyw.com/books/history/Franks.htm
The Franks are a Germanic tribe that migrated from their homeland east of the Rhine in the 6th century to modern day Gaul. The Franks were Germanic and do not confuse them with French. Many say that Charlemagne was a French emperor but that is not the truth. The ancestor of the French are peasants and not the ruling Franks and the later French kings/nobles have no Frankish ancestry.
2. (Date: September 13 2010) fromdeathtolife.org/chistory/franks.html
Franks were one of the barbarian groups who contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire by conquering Roman land. The Franks survived longer than the other barbarian groups. Even when the Frankish kingdom was eventually divided into five small kingdoms, these kingdoms were still Frankish. Frankish kingdoms survive when the Vandals, Goths, and Huns did not.
3. (Date: September 22 2010) www.whiteplainspublicschools.org/.../Charlemagne_and_the_Franks_(34). ppt
The Franks did greatly affect life in the middle ages.
- Germanic tribes took over Roman lands.
- Hundreds of little kingdoms took the place of the Western Roman Empire in Europe.
- Kingdoms were always at war
4. (Date: September 22 2010)www.whiteplainspublicschools.org/.../Charlemagne_and_the_Franks_(34). ppt
Frankish kingdom was a rural, undeveloped, simple society where people were loyal only to the king. This gave king the support of the people and a great deal of power. The Franks became Catholic under the rule of a Frankish king. The king name is Clovis. Clovis worked together with the pope in Rome.
5. (Date: September 22 2010)
The Franks was the cause fall of the Roman Empire by conquering it. Because The Franks were the cause fall of the Roman Empire, I think that Franks hates Roman Empire. I think that The Franks are cruel to Roman Empire. But The Franks can work together with a pope in Rome. Even The Franks hates Roman Empire, but they still can work together with a Roman pope. Maybe The Franks also can work together.
Goth
1. Who are they?
The goths were another group of barbarians. They were once powerful but for a short time only. There were also other goths such as the visigoths (west goths) and the ostrogoths (east goths).

3. How did they affect the Roman Empire?
Theodric became leader of the ostrogoths in 481 AD. Then he became ruler in Rome in 493 AD. After some incidents including the Ostrogoth’s rulers, the eastern emeror, Justinian, tryed to attack the ostrogoth leader, Theodahad. At 540 AD Italy became a Roman Province.
4. What was their culture and society like?
The Visigoths and the Ostrogoths were the two main branches of the Goths. The Ostrogoths did many writings and fragments. They had theUlfilas bible about the Gothic literature and the gothic language. They would write the things that happened in their incidents during their time. And also some other religious writings and fragments. Most Goths write in the Latin language. The Visigothic written laws had already been put by Euric. The Visigothic laws dates from the later days of the monarchy, being put forth by King Reccaswinth about 654.
5. How do you think they thought of the Romans?
I think they were like against each other. I think the goths felt like the romans were their enemies.

My Friend.
My home and the whole empires. The Barbarians are different than us the Roman Empire. There are 4 barbarians, which is Huns, Goths, Vandals and the Franks. Hundreds of little kingdoms took the place of the Western Roman Empire in Europe. The barbarians were cruel to us the Roman Empire, maybe they seem want to take the wealth of Rome. Maybe the lost of my home and the whole of the Roman Empire was just not my luck, or because barbarians are really cruel. Thanks for listening maybe you can help me to find a place to live. Reflection
In this project I did good. I collect my information and share it to my group. I keep researching about the barbarians for this project. I feel relieved to be able to understand these barbarians and being able to learn how the roman empire fell. It is very interesting to discover how the Romans fell. And now I know that the Barbarians are uncivilized people.
