Kalimantan beliefs: Borneo Island
Mount Kinabul:
- Legends of Mount Kinabul:
Until now,Kinabul’s name is still mystery. The words come from Kadazan and Aki Nabalu, meaning ‘the respect place of the dead people’. In Borneo Island, Mount Kinabul there is a village, and the people in that village called Kadazandusun. Kadazandusuns belief that their spirits live on the top of the mountain. Among a stones from the mountain peak grows some moss which often Kadazandusunguides said provided food for the spirits of their ancestor.Kadazandusun guides performed religious ceremonies after reaching the mountain peak. These ceremonies were performed to calm the spirit of the mountain as well as the ancestral spirits who lived there.
Another theory about the mountain's name comes from the reduction of Kina meaning “China” and Balu, meaning “widow”. A Kadazandusun legend tells the story of a Chinese prince climb the mountain. The prince is searching a huge pearl on the peak which is guarded by a wild dragon. The prince succeeds in slaying the dragon and stealing the pearl. The prince from china married a Kadazan women, but soon the prince leave her and return to china. His wife, heartbroken, wanders to the mountain to mourn. There she was belief to turn into stone.
- Kadazandusun beliefs:
A Kadazandusun creation myth tells the highest god Kinohiringan, and his wife Umunsumundu made the earth while Kinohiringan created the sky and the clouds. But the clouds Kinohiringan created were smaller than the earth , and Kinohiringan was ashamed. To save his dignity, Umunsumundu change the shape of the earth, making it smaller and so by created Mount Kinabul
A Kadazandusun story tells of a giant king, the name of the giant king is Gayo Nakan (big eater) who lived in the base of the mountain. His people are tired of his very big appetite and force to feed him. Hearing the people complaining, the king told the people bury him alive at the top of the mountain. Bringing all their tools, the work that they just done to the king is useless. Until the king say the magic word and drown into the rocks. Then he told his people that, due to lack patience, drought and hunger would oppress them, but promised to help them in times of war. Fearful and repent, people sacrificed their first offerings at the wishing pond, below the peak that was Gayo Nakan’s grave.
